3-25-2013 Day 79 At Sea

Good beginnings – another 30 minutes of sleep after re-setting our clocks again.

It is clear that we are now crossing the Indian Ocean on our way to the Seychelles.  In 2010 we were scheduled to go there, but due to pirate concerns at the time, we had to divert the ship to the Maldives instead.  While piracy is still a concern, it has not prohibited our ship from making the Seychelles a destination on this cruise.  However, we received a letter from the captain stating all the extra precautions the ship is taking to ensure a safe passage.  Included in this was a pirate safety drill this morning.  After one long ring of the ship’s alarm and then the message from P1130392the captain announcing “testing, testing, testing,” everyone is to go to the interior of the ship.  Since Doug and I were in our cabins, it meant the hallway outside.  And, everyone has to sit, not stand, in case the captain has to maneuver the ship that would result in heeling of the ship.  This was a first for us.  But I’m also glad that safety is a big concern on this ship.

On a lighter note, I had my cooking class with George Geary today, followed by lunch in the Pinnacle.  I have to say, the cooking classes aren’t what they used to be.  And several of us commented about how lame this particular class was – we “made” 3 salads.  ItP1130393 took about 10 minutes since all the ingredients were set out and the only thing that had to be done was cut up some apples and whisk some oil for a dressing.  George spent most of the hour just telling stories (most of which we had heard from him before.)

For lunch we had a Waldorf salad, a cold pasta salad with blue cheese and walnuts, and a Chinese chicken salad.  They were OK, P1130402but way too simple for a cooking class.  The only one I’ll probably make is the Chinese chicken one – it was actually good.  Some wine and a square of something sweet like a brownie (no one ever said what it was and there were no recipes for it!) with the salads and that was it.  A big disappointment.

After dinner, Doug and I went to hear the “comedy and impressions of Jeff Burghart” who has appeared on Comedy Central and Star Search.  We thought he was actually pretty funny and so we enjoyed his performance.

At the end of Day 1 crossing into pirate waters, still no sighting!
